Subject: Ellington Box Set
The songs on here are out of order, but the correct order can be seen on the box’s cover.
The first song “Delta Serenade” is a groove while “Dusk” is deeper, slower, more intimate. “East St. Louis Toodle-oo” is darker and a bit more bluesy at fist with a gravely trumpet sound, but the tempo swings back and forth, picking up and allowing the tune to become brighter at parts. “Mood Indigo” is, just like the title suggests, moody. With a twinkling piano, the tune is slow and gentle. “Ring Dem Bells” is loud, cheery, danceable, and full of ringing bells and swirling brass solos. And the bright “Stompy Jones” easily flows suit with its instrumental call and response. “The Mooche” and “Warm Valley” are cool and slow, and “Warm Valley’s” piercing saxophone solos end the set sweetly.
Listen to Ellington’s extra-bluesy 1931 composition “It Don’t Mean A Thing (If It Ain’t Got That Swing)” played live in 1943 here: (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qDQpZT3GhDg)
